Indoor capacity limits increase to 35% today for N.J. restaurants, casinos

(New Jersey).- New Jersey’s indoor capacity limits for restaurants, gyms and other businesses imposed last year due to coronavirus pandemic will increase on Friday morning from 25% to 35%.

Murphy also announced the indoor gathering limit for religious ceremonies or services, wedding ceremonies, political activities, and memorial services will increase to 35% with a maximum of 150 people. That’s also up from 25%, but keeps the total capacity limit the same.

The increase is possible because the outbreak continued to slow this week as vaccination efforts increased, Gov. Phil Murphy said on Wednesday when he announced the change. Hospitalizations, new cases and the rate of transmission of the virus have all declined in recent weeks, Murphy said.

New Jersey health officials on Thursday reported another 2,503 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 101 additional deaths.

The seven-day average for confirmed positive tests dropped to 3,417, down 21% from a week ago and 22% from a month ago. That’s the lowest seven-day average for new cases since Nov. 14.

Murphy’s new order, which goes into effect at 8 a.m., comes ahead of Super Bowl weekend for bars and restaurants and the order eliminates a previous restriction forcing those businesses to close by 10 p.m., though towns and counties may still enact local curfews that would require restaurants and other businesses to close as early as 8 p.m.

The indoor capacity increase also applies to entertainment and recreation businesses, including casinos and gyms, and all personal care businesses, such as barbershops and salons.

Sitting at bars indoors is still prohibited, however, as officials believe it creates the danger of close and prolonged proximity between patrons, bartenders, and servers.
